Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection - Press Release

Monday, July 15 2024

This week is going to be extremely challenging: Drought conditions, a heatwave reaching up to 42 degrees Celsius, and strong winds up to 7 Beaufort create a dangerous combination for the outbreak and mainly the rapid spread of even the smallest fire.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, Attica, Boeotia, Evia, Argolida, Ilia, Lesvos, Chios and Psara, Crete, as well as areas in Corinthia, Achaia, Laconia, Phthiotis, and Xanthi will be at level 4 on the fire risk map. Additionally, Rhodope and Evros are on the very high-risk index, where significant ground forces and 11 aerial units are currently tackling a very challenging fire in the Kyriaki area. It is noteworthy that almost every day we face at least one dangerous fire in Evros.

Today, a coordination meeting will be held with all relevant ministries, agencies, and security forces, with the participation of the Risk Assessment Committee.

A disaster can occur in just a few minutes. It is also the duty of citizens to show the necessary empathy, caution, and responsibility.
